No sense Big heads

This is my first typeface. I designed it during a compact expertise week, where i and all the other students, held by Professor Gerald Christ and his colleague, Andre Leonhardt, were asked to create a new font following a simple premise: represent growth.

The main idea of my font comes from two concepts:

  1. show the components of each shape
  2. shapes growing from the sides
    (free spaces between each shape)

Both concepts came from the observation of a simple image, about some cigarettes residues in the floor. The concept that helped to developed the visual idea was the time, an aspect that you can’t see in the picture but just can have an idea of it because the position of this cigarettes residues where changing. This changes of position made me think in the formal aspects of the font: soft, curved, light, contrasted, and fancy.

This typography is the result of the idea of growing between two images: the first is the one with the cigarettes which was the first inspiration that made me think about how could look the move of those cigarettes during a certain time. Since there is no clear grow in this first image, the second one was the one that captures a living material (grass) growing between these floor stones.

The result of the typeface considers:

  1. A strong base where the things can grow
  2. Heavy heads that shows the growing direction
  3. Thin body to make the heads heavier
  4. Curved lines to show a soft growing

Click here if you want to try my first version! I have to fix the file, but you can play with it meanwhile =)
